Mary Gilhooley Obituary

Mary H. Gilhooley, born September 6, 1949, passed away on March 30, 2026. She was the wife of James W. Gilhooley of Dunmore.
Mary was a devoted and loving stay-at-home mom. Later on in life, she found her true passion as a teacher's aide. Her patience, kindness, and steady encouragement shaped the lives of countless children. She had a gift for making every student feel seen and heard. She was a true advocate for all. A lifelong Democrat, Mary believed deeply in fairness, dignity, and the importance of caring for one another.

She will be remembered for her quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and a gift for storytelling. Whether she was sharing a favorite memory or delivering one of her spot-on impersonations, she had a way of bringing laughter and life into every room. Her stories didn't just entertain-they connected people, and they will be treasured by all who heard them. Along with her sense of humor, she was equally talented in the kitchen, especially when it came to her Christmas cookies, which were a seasonal highlight year after year.

Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, roles she cherished above all else. Her family was the center of her world, and she poured love into every relationship, creating a home filled with warmth, humor, and unwavering support. Those who knew her will remember her for her loyalty, her spirited conversations, and the way she made people feel welcomed and understood.

Mary is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Kara Gilhooley; her brother James Higgins; and his wife, Mary Claire, and son Danny.

She is survived by her three sons, Chris Gilhooley and wife Mallory, Matthew Gilhooley, and James Jr. Gilhooley; her sister Sally Mastri and husband Thomas; and her grandchildren Irelyn, Jameson, Minnie, Declan, Nolan, and Kellan. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Center.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Residential Home Hospice for their compassionate support and loving care.
